â€Å"A lot of geeks are pale, bespectacled, wear dark clothing and don t get out much - the stereotype exists because it is very often true. I could pass for a non-geek but it would be inaccurate.† Said China Mieville. A quote meaning that you can’t escape who you are. It is true that Hollywood has stereotyped Asians in movies. I, however, see myself as an Asian who is not like what people see in movies. We have been stereotyped and I disagree with it all. I define myself as an Asian who is twenty years old, who goes to school and study computer science. Who attends church and loves meeting people by being social. In A Christmas Story (Clark 1983) there was a scene were Asians at a restaurant were singing in broken English serving duck instead of chicken or turkey. In the film the Asians did not know how to sing neither speak good English. The setting was placed in a restaurant called Chop Suey Palace Co. The Asian singers would sing and serve food. They didn’t have to sing, but they did. While they were doing so, they were being laughed at by the American families. Hollywood says that we are very generous and jolly people. That we like to eat duck and can’t speak good English. The shot of the scene was a wide angle so you can see the whole restaurant and the family’s reaction of the Asians singing. The music they were singing were Christmas lyrics. While they were trying to sing, they had one Asian who tried to te ach them.
